Stochastic Optimization for an Analytical Model of Saltwater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers
The present study implements a stochastic optimization technique to optimally manage freshwater pumping from coastal aquifers. Our simulations utilize the well-known sharp interface model for saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers together with its known analytical solution. The objective is to maximize the total volume of freshwater pumped by the wells from the aquifer while, at the same time...
متن کاملAbstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers
In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...
متن کاملLaboratory study of the simultaneous effect of discharge well and cut of wall on reducing saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers
These days, the sea level rising and excessive harvesting of coastal aquifers has caused the intrusion of saltwater into underground water sources. In this study, the performance of the use of cut of wall, discharge well, and their simultaneous use in preventing saltwater intrusion has been evaluated in a laboratory model and under different scenarios. The results show that the appropriate use ...
متن کاملSaltwater Intrusion Modeling: Verification and Application to an Agriculturally Used Coastal Arid Region in Oman
This paper deals with numerical modeling of groundwater systems. Ensuring the sustainability of an aquifer’s yield is one of the fundamental tasks for nowadays groundwater management, especially within agriculturally used regions. Within the context of the research project ”International Water Research Alliance Saxony” (Kalbus et al., 2011, submitted), the groundwater quality of near-coastal, a...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical investigation of saltwater intrusion dynamics in flux-controlled groundwater systems
[1] Sea level rise and reduction of groundwater fluxes due to changes in rainfall patterns are the two major climate change–induced hydrological variables that can severely affect saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers. In this study we use a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to study the impacts of changes in one of these climate change–induced hydrological varia...
